Last year I wrote an editors letter for @glamourmag about access to women’s reproductive rights, entitled “This Time Around, Politics Is Personal”. I celebrated Ireland repealing the 8th amendment and articulated my worry about what would happen in America if women’s access to abortion was chipped away. It doesn’t mean abortion won’t happen- Ireland’s decades long ban shows that it will but women who can afford to will travel for the procedure , and those who can’t will put themselves in medical and legal danger to carry out the procedures. History shows us that making abortion illegal doesn’t end it. Women in Ireland traveled hundreds of miles to Britain and the Netherlands to terminate pregnancies. Where will women in the U.S. go? Today in three states at least half of women of reproductive age already have to travel more than 90 miles to reach an abortion clinic; that distance will only grow if abortion is outlawed in certain areas. One in four women in this country will have an abortion in their lifetime. Will the U.S. really become a place where they or their doctors could be sent to jail? We’ve seen in many countries around the world that making abortion illegal only penalizes the most vulnerable women who don’t have the means to travel and, in worst-case scenarios, leads women to take dangerous risks to get the procedure. #alabama #abortion #womensrights #repealthe8th #ireland #plannedparenthood

SO Honored to get to present @AMBERROSETAMBLYN With the @ROOMTOREAD #SUPERHERO Award. Loved her speech which included a huge shout out to her teacher mother. At Glamour, we are in the business of telling stories of powerful women. Women who are fearless. Women who are authentic. Women of substance with something to say.Amber Tamblyn is all of that and more. Many of her on-screen characters, as far back as "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" have celebrated the importance of women lifting each other up. But 13 years after that memorable film, Amber launched an audacious movement that was decades overdue when she became a founder of Times Up, springing to action when her sisters needed her most and ensuring that the collective voice of women would forever be heard. In her recently published memoir “Era of Ignition”, she boldly sacrifices the privilege of privacy in service of women, and humanity. She is raw and honest and unapologetic about the gender discrimination and violence she has faced because she is female. Her journey to not only defy, but obliterate, the box that the entertainment industry and society tried to put her in is inspiring and a reminder to every woman that we have enormous value to bring to the world. Sony, whose beautiful story we watched earlier, and Amber may come from disparate backgrounds and circumstances, but they share a courageous spirit. and Amber may come from disparate backgrounds and circumstances, but they share a courageous spirit. There is a fire in every young girl waiting to be ignited and education is the ultimate spark. Room to Read knows that when a book is put in the hands of a girl can she can see herself as the hero of her own story. Girls turn the tide on long standing inequities. They speak up against injustice. They no longer let others underestimate their worth. They become women like Amber Tamblyn.#timesup #roomtoread #girlseducation #superhero #literacymatters #literacy #ittakesavillage #ambertamblyn #notallheroeswearcapes #rtrendofimpossible

The Glamour Home page right now is the images of the 25 People Who Voted for the Most Restrictive Abortion Ban in America Notice some similarities? This week Alabama passed the most restrictive abortion ban in America, outlawing the procedure from the moment of conception onward. There are no exceptions for cases of rape or incest, with a lone allowance made for instances in which a woman's health is at risk. So who voted to strip women of their reproductive freedom, a right that has been enshrined in our law at the national level since 1973? Well, in Alabama, the antichoice movement has a look. All 25 state senators who voted for the bill are Republican white men; there are just four women in the chamber and all of them are Democrats, who opposed the bill. #Alabama #AbortionBill #womensrights

Another humbling day in southern #Malawi talking to people that @concernworldwideus are working with in the area, Including Mary James and Daud a couple who are working on having their own grocery store and talked to me about how they are sharing a budget and roles (rare in Malawi households which is one of the worst countries in the world on the gender inequality index). I also spent time with Saujati whose home was destroyed by Cyclone Idai- her family has idea the storm was coming and were awoken in the middle of the night and had to run for their lives. They all survived but their home did not. #cyclone #disasterrelief #malawi #concern #concernworldwide

A humbling and inspirational afternoon with some female farmers in #Malawi. I talked to Agnus, who has changed the way she plants crops because of climate change. I talked with an 18 year old young woman who wanted to finish school but like most girls in Malawi they don’t finish secondary school education. @concernworldwideus
